user interviews
We got a lot of useful feedback based on the interview we took. Some friend think the notification experience is OK while others try Friendly app to manipulate all social networking service notifications. In our small pool of research, 4–5 people quit Facebook/ignore all notifications and complain about it. That’s about a 33% negative response to the current notification system, obviously a detriment to the social network.
Here is the feedback and responses we got from interviewees. We evaluated the satisfaction rate based on their feedback.
What users told us
· They want related notifications, and an efficient notification system. They want to get rid of useless ads, and strangers’ posts.
· Improvement for discoverability for notification settings
· Don’t know how to disable all group notifications
· Notification settings are very complicated and time-consuming (Setting notifications is an advanced function for users. Not all users want to set all of their notifications one by one)
What users expect to see:
· Reactions to their own posts
· Comments on their own posts
· Tags of the user
· Related activities/activities involve you
How to improve:
· Give users more choices to customize the notification system
· Give the ability to sort by priority, hierarchy, and filter
· Separate direct notifications from indirect notifications
painpoints
Based on the analysis we got, I wrote down three main points of dissatisfaction:
1. Too many unrelated notifications
2. Too difficult to find/change notification settings
3. Related notifications, but ones that people do not care about
03. ideation
